Job summary
We are looking to recruit a Nursing Assistant, preferably with experience in caring for patients with palliative care needs.
NVQ 2/3 in Health & Social Care would be an advantage.
The successful applicant will be part of an enthusiastic multi-disciplinary team providing care for patients and families, both on the Hospice Inpatient Unit and our Hospice at Home team.
The post is subject to flexible rostering (annualised hours) and internal rotation to meet the needs of the service.
Only open to UK Residents to apply as we are a registered Charity, not the NHS. Must be available to attend interview in person.

To assist trained nursing staff in the delivery of high standards of care in accordance with the policies and procedures in place at Springhill Hospice and within the Nursing team.

This role is based at Springhill Hospice
Springhill Hospice providesthe following specialist palliative care services to adult patients with life-shortening illnesses:
A 16-bed Inpatient unit providing 24-hour medical and nursing care.
Hospice at Home Service for people who want to end their days in their own home by providing the support and symptom management they need to be able to do so.
A Wellbeing Support Service operating Monday Thursday, with sessions both within the Hospice and in community settings, offering different programmes for wellbeing, symptom self-management and advance care planning.
A Community Service providing specialist palliative care and support to patients and families in their own homes, including a Night Sitting service.
A 24-hour Palliative Care Advice Line for patients, families, carers and health professionals.
Bereavement Support for people who are experiencing difficulty in their grieving process following the loss of a loved one.
Counselling Services for patients, carers and relatives who are experiencing psychological and emotional distress in their lives as a result of their own life shortening illness or the illness of someone significant to them.
Education and Training Centre providing specialist courses in palliative care and a range of other training programmes for Hospice staff and local health and social care professionals.

Main responsibilities
Ward Duties:
1.1 To work as a member of the nursing team assisting nurses to provide a high standard of care to patients, both on the inpatient unit and within the patients own home.
1.2 Assist in general care of patients e.g. hygiene, care of pressure areas, nutritional needs.
1.3 Assist in maintaining a high standard of cleanliness.
1.4 Perform escort/chaperone duties as directed by the trained nurses.
1.5 Inform trained staff of any change in patients condition.
1.6 Be aware of the need to treat patients as individuals. Maintain patients confidentiality at all times.
1.7 Have an understanding of the principles of infection control and the risks of cross-infection.
1.8 Ensure correct policy for care and custody of patients property/valuables is adhered to.
Education:
2.1 Attend mandatory training programmes and undertake online mandatory training as required.
2.2 Report to senior staff any situation/occurrence reported to you by patients, relatives/visitors.
2.3 As required by trained staff, undertake training and be assessed on competency by Ward Sister and Senior nurses.
Personnel/Communications:
3.1 Read, understand and comply with all Hospice policies and procedures, applying the principles as appropriate to role.
3.2 To be aware of individual specific responsibilities in respect of the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults, in relation to role.
3.3 Report to trained staff as appropriate.
3.4 Participate in the appraisal process.
3.5 Communicate effectively both verbally and written. Answer telephone correctly and politely at all times. Refer enquiries to Nurse in charge.
3.6 Be aware of procedure for evacuation of patients in case of fire. Know emergency exits. Demonstrate knowledge to trained staff.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Willingness to undertake NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care.
Desirable
Hold NVQ Levels 1 and 2. Willingness to undertake NVQ Level 3.
Experience Desirable
Experience of working in a healthcare environment. Evidence of caring for people with palliative care needs.
Knowledge and Skills Essential
Willingness to undertake training in general observations skills. Good interpersonal skills. Empathetic and caring nature. Desire to increase knowledge and skills within palliative care. Confidence to interact with people who have a variety of disabilities/needs and their families.
Desirable
Evidence of training in basic observations ie BP/TPR. Evidence of working with patient assessments and care plans. Evidence of having attended workshops/study days relevant to field of practice.
Other Essential
Good attendance and punctuality record. Enthusiastic and motivated. Self awareness and mature outlook. Flexible approach to work. Good team player.
