Job summary

Join our friendly and supportive team as a GP Receptionist and play a vital role in delivering high-quality care to our patients. This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same. Main duties of the job

As a GP Receptionist, you will be responsible for providing a professional, courteous and efficient service to patients, visitors and members of the wider healthcare team. You will act as the first point of contact, welcoming patients to the practice, answering telephone enquiries, booking and managing appointments, and signposting patients to the most appropriate service.

The role also involves a range of administrative duties, including processing prescriptions, maintaining accurate patient records, handling incoming and outgoing correspondence, and supporting the smooth day-to-day running of the practice. You will be expected to maintain confidentiality at all times, work effectively as part of a busy multidisciplinary team, and contribute to delivering a high standard of patient care and customer service.

This is a fast-paced role that requires excellent communication, organisation and IT skills, together with the ability to remain calm under pressure and prioritise competing demands.

Job Purpose

To provide a professional, efficient and welcoming reception and administrative service to patients, visitors and members of the primary healthcare team. The post holder will act as the first point of contact for patients, ensuring they receive a high standard of customer service while supporting the smooth day-to-day operation of the practice.

Person Specification

Experience Desirable

Previous experience working in a GP practice. Experience working within an NHS or healthcare setting. Experience using EMIS Web or another GP clinical system. Experience processing repeat prescriptions or appointment booking systems. Experience of NHS patient registration procedures. Experience of dealing with patients in a fast-paced primary care environment.

Qualifications Essential

GCSE (or equivalent) Grade 4/C or above in English. GCSE (or equivalent) Grade 4/C or above in Mathematics. Good standard of general education. Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and email systems.

Desirable

NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Business Administration, Customer Service or a related subject. Care Certificate or equivalent (if applicable). Training in customer service or reception duties. Knowledge of NHS primary care systems (e.g. EMIS Web). Medical terminology qualification or training.
