Job summary
This post is based in the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) department at St Mary's Hospital. Our service is one of the first emergency medicine-led SDEC units and forms part of a highly effective, collaborative urgent care system. The role offers excellent clinical exposure to a wide range of emergency presentations, with a particular focus on acute medical patients. Access to advanced diagnostics, specialist advice and follow-up services makes this a rewarding opportunity to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. The post is well suited to doctors with at least one year of experience in emergency medicine or acute medicine following foundation training, and includes protected time for self-development, study and quality improvement work. Post holders will be supported by an educational supervisor or mentor and encouraged to set and achieve their own professional development objectives.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work a varied shift pattern within Same Day Emergency Care, including at least one late shift each week and participation in a one-in-three weekend rota. Annualised working and self-rostering are available and actively encouraged, offering flexibility and greater control over work patterns. In addition, one educational development shift is provided every six weeks, creating protected time for quality improvement, research, teaching and personal professional development.

Job description Job responsibilities
Deliver comprehensive assessment, investigation and management for a broad range of patients suitable for Same Day Emergency Care, including diagnostics, infusion therapies and clear follow-up planning.
Support the wider urgent and emergency care pathway by managing workload efficiently, reducing waiting times and using next-day review or alternative pathways to improve patient flow.
Work in close partnership with specialty teams to secure timely advice within a single attendance, strengthening clinical decision-making and improving the patient experience.
Contribute actively to the multidisciplinary team to provide safe, effective and high-quality care across the service.
Lead or contribute to quality improvement, research and service evaluation projects that drive innovation and enhance patient care.
Review investigation results promptly and ensure appropriate follow-up arrangements are in place for patients when needed.
