Job summary
Kirkgate Surgery is looking to recruit a caring and motivated Health Care Assistant (HCA) to join our friendly and supportive clinical team on a temporary basis to provide maternity cover.
This is a zero-hours contract for approximately 6 months, with an expected 4-8 hours per week, although some flexibility may be required to meet the needs of the Practice.
We are looking for someone who enjoys working in a patient-facing role, has excellent communication and organisational skills, and is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. Whether you are an experienced HCA or looking to further develop your skills within primary care, we would love to hear from you.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work alongside our GPs, nurse, and HCA team to deliver high-quality patient care, supporting health checks, chronic disease management, phlebotomy, and treatment room duties. They will play an important role in supporting our long term conditions management, supporting the smooth and efficient running of the practice. They will assist with health promotion, lifestyle advice, and patient recalls, while maintaining clinical areas, accurate records, and infection control standards. This role is ideal for an experienced HCA or a HCA with general practice experience, who would like to learn new skills and be supported in development.

Job description Job responsibilities
The Health Care Assistant (HCA) will work as part of the clinical team to provide safe, effective, and high-quality care to our patients. The role involves delivering a wide range of clinical services, supporting the smooth running of the practice, and contributing to our patient recall and chronic disease management systems.
Key Duties & ResponsibilitiesClinical Tasks (as trained and competent to undertake):
Phlebotomy
Blood pressure monitoring
ECG recording
NHS health checks and new patient health checks
Height, weight, and BMI measurements
Urinalysis
Smoking and alcohol advice
Basic wound care and dressings
Vaccination support (e.g., flu, B12 injections)
Chronic disease reviews and monitoring (e.g., hypertension, diabetes first part, mental health, learning disability)
Health promotion and lifestyle advice
Supporting the practice recall system
Maintaining accurate clinical records in line with policy
General:
Adhere to infection control procedures
Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, and administrative staff
Participate in clinical meetings and training sessions
Support continuous improvement and innovation in patient care
Person Specification
Experience Essential
Previous experience working as an HCA in primary care Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Positive and friendly attitude Passionate about providing excellent patient care Good organisational skills and attention to detail Willing to learn and develop skills.
Desirable
Delivering other IM injections (e.g. B12) Chronic disease reviews and monitoring, including: Mental health, Learning disability, Diabetes (First part), Simple asthma and COPD checks. Basic wound care and dressings 24 hours BP monitoring, assessment an actioning Supporting the GP in minor surgery (e.g. setting up, cleaning equipment) Offering simple smoking and alcohol advice Assisting in the patient recall system and QOF Emergency drug checking Stock checking and ordering of equipment Using SystmOne and ICE
Qualifications Essential
NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care or GCSEs at grade 4-9 (C-A) (or equivalent, such as O levels). Evidence of clinical training (e.g. phlebotomy, ECG's ).
