The Acute Medicine Unit (& SDEC) at the Furness General Hospital prides itself as a Centre of Diagnostic Excellence. Patients are managed effectively and efficiently. This is due to the ethos of the team and the presence of senior clinical decision makers throughout the day.

We stream medical patients directly into our SDEC, from Primary Care, ambulance providers and the Emergency Department. The successful candidate will provide support/ advice and guidance to the Medical SDEC team, alongside their Acute Medical Unit duties.
Our SDEC provides a comprehensive service aided by our excellent relationship with general internal medicine specialties, pharmacy, and radiology. Complex medical diagnoses can be established and then referred to the relevant specialty for continuing care.
There is an emphasis on the ability of the team members to excel as General Internal Medicine Physicians.
Working hours: 10PAs divided into 8.5 PA DCC and 1.5 SPA. 1 additional PA will be provided for on call and supplement. Additional roles can be negotiated in addition to basic PA's.
Main duties of the job
The Acute Medicine team comprises of a Consultant led team covering 20 Acute Medical Unit beds and a Medical SDEC.
The team is assisted by the on-call consultant, ST3+ on call for medicine and intermediate grade doctors on call for medicine.
The successful candidate will have completed and or awaiting completion of a CCT/CESR in GIM/Specialty area and have the opportunity for a joint job plan designed with them to accommodate their continued practice in a sub-specialty interest, Acute Medicine and their parent specialty.
The successful candidate will:
Be dedicated to hands-on involvement with medical admissions to the Acute Medicine Unit focusing on timely assessment, management and discharge Supervise junior doctors and ANPs, seeing patients in our medical SDEC & on AMU Supervise & co-ordinate junior doctors on AMU Teach & train undergraduate medical students & junior doctors Provide leadership & work as part of our team Be part of the on-call team
Part-time applicants will have their PAs adjusted pro rata and additional sessions/ on call to be discussed.
About us
We operatefrom three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, andUlverstonCommunity Health Centre.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our Community Service for adults are provided in people's homes ,community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent , improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care , advice and support.
