Job summary

PROSPER (PeRinatal emotiOnal skillS Personality disordER), is a NIHR-EME randomised controlled trial (RCT) investigating the efficacy of online perinatal Emotional Skills Groups (ESGs) (in addition to usual care (UC)) for women and birthing parents with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). The overall sample size is 216 participants recruited from at least seven centres in England.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to carry out clinical and non-clinical study activities related to the project that they are working on. They will liaise with the central study team at the University of Bristol. They will be based within the Perinatal Mental Health Service and be fully integrated into the team. They will be managed by Dr Janice Rigby, the local Principal Investigator for Prosper and will have regular contact with the study team. The post holder will be expected to liaise with clinicians within the Trust to support the recruitment of participants.

Communication

Internally, the post holder will communicate regularly with the Principal Investigator, the central project study team, and multi-disciplinary teams across the Trust. The post holder will also be required to communicate effectively with service users and research participants. They will have the ability to confidently and clearly communicate with groups or individuals; to explain the research process in a clear and concise manner; and to write in a clear and grammatically accurate way. They will be responsible for the recording of notes in line with SLaM Foundation Trust and external sites record keeping policies. Much of this communication will be highly sensitive because of the nature of the work. As such it will need to be undertaken with great care and confidentiality.

Externally, they will communicate with other applicable study sites and the study team.

All methods of communication will be used.

Critical Thinking Skills

Emotional support for the service user where necessary.

The post holder will be required to monitor study performance against pro-rata targets and to make judgements about how to coordinate effectively the collection of data across the Trust in a timely and safe manner.

The post holder will need to be research literate, and will be capable of reading, interpreting and explaining research study designs and results to others, including staff and potential research participants.

Planning and Organisational skills

The post holder will need to undertake extensive planning and project management in respect of the study, from beginning to end. They will coordinate and liaise with departments and members of research teams to affect the smooth running of the study. They will coordinate the collection of data in a timely and safe manner, whilst having the capacity for patience and tolerance, particularly when working under pressure to deliver to time and target.

They will have a proactive approach to following Trust and Team objectives and engagement in sharing best practice across the department.

The post holder will monitor patient recruitment to the study, identify areas of low patient recruitment, and take a lead role in identifying barriers to recruitment, and how to overcome these barriers.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

oA First-class or Upper-second-class Bachelors degree with Honours in Psychology that is accredited by the British Psychological Society and confers the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society

Experience Essential

oPrior experience of working on mental health research oEvidence of involvement in clinical and research governance oExperience of administrative work including data management oExperience working in an NHS environment with service user contact oProfessional familiarity with clinical settings, such as mental health and/or social care practice and terminology

Desirable

oPrior experience of working on a randomised controlled trial oUnderstanding of the service users of the Trust (which could include lived experience of conditions the Trust deals with or of receiving services relevant to those the Trust provides)

Knowledge/Skills Essential

oKnowledge and experience of research methodology and statutory clinical trial regulation and GCP oUnderstanding of Confidentiality & Data Protection oKnowledge of medical or medical research terminology oDemonstrated depth and breadth of specialist knowledge of subject matter to effectively contribute to the research programme oAbility to organise and prioritise own workload to meet required deadlines
