Job summary

Come and work for a successful NHS Talking Therapies service with an excellent reputation for delivering high-quality patient care and consistently high recovery rates. You will be employed by Richmond Borough Mind, which delivers the Step 2 element of the NHS Richmond Talking Therapies Service, led by South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLStG).

We are an established Low-Intensity Talking Therapies service with an excellent reputation, performing highly in London recovery figures. We work closely with our Step 3 High-Intensity colleagues in this co-located service in Twickenham.

The role will involve a mix of remote and hybrid working; however, this may change depending on service needs. Please note that all staff are required to attend in person for equipment management, client work, and occasional meetings.

Main duties of the job

Qualified in low-intensity work and holding a recognised low-intensity CBT qualification, you will be enthusiastic, self-motivated, and able to meet the demands of a challenging but rewarding role.

Opportunities to train as a supervising PWP may be available to suitably experienced candidates. You will manage your own caseload by delivering workshops, offering cCBT, and providing individual guided self-help. Regular clinical supervision will be provided by the Clinical or Service Lead, alongside regular line management and training opportunities.

You will work within a dynamic, dedicated, and committed team of Senior PWPs, PWPs, and trainees, and be part of successful teams across both RB Mind and our partner organisation, South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust.

Based near central Twickenham, the role is partly home-based, and you will be expected to work one evening per week. You will also be required to travel across the Borough of Richmond to ensure our service remains responsive to the needs of all communities.

Job description Job responsibilities

Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners assess and support patients with common mental health problems in the self-management of their recovery. Treatment interventions aim to support clinical improvement, recovery, and social inclusion, with a focus on maintaining employment, returning to the labour market, and accessing training opportunities.

PWPs contribute by delivering evidence-based, low-intensity psychological treatments, complemented by information, advice, and signposting. The service primarily provides psychoeducational groups, alongside interventions such as guided self-help and computerised cognitive behavioural therapy (cCBT), as well as links to employment, training, and benefits support.

Low-intensity treatments are delivered within prescribed time limits via face-to-face, telephone, and video sessions. PWPs are expected to operate in a stepped-care, high-volume environment, managing a large caseload and organising their time effectively to maximise patient support.

The post holder will work with people from diverse backgrounds and should be committed to equal opportunities. They may be required to work in various community settings and must be prepared to be flexible in their working arrangements.

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Experience in working with people with common Mental Health problems specifically anxiety and depression. Experience of joint work and multi-agency and partnership working. An understanding of the NHS Talking Therapies Programme (previously Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT)) and the concept of stepped care and the ability to contribute to the development of best practice. Knowledge of working with diversity including across ethnic communities, age, LGBT, gender, disability and religion. Knowledge of outcome measures and their use for clinical and audit purposes. Knowledge of safeguarding vulnerable adults and child protection legislation. Understanding of and commitment to service user involvement. Ability to undertake client assessments (including risk assessments) and gather information about the duration and impact of illness and motivational levels. Ability to be self-reflective and use supervision, training and performance review to enhance professional development, skills and knowledge. Ability to develop good therapeutic relationships including via telephone and face-to-face work with clients and help people through group work, guided self-help, computerised CBT and other step 2 interventions. High standard of written and verbal communication skills to communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues, healthcare professionals, service users, carers and relatives. Ability to deliver psycho-educational groups/workshops. Ability to work under pressure and manage own personal stress. Good computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office packages, and the ability to use computer-based information system to record all client assessments and activity.
