The purpose of this research project is to explore how digital twin technology can enhance the efficiency, comfort, security, and privacy of smart homes. By creating virtual replicas of physical homes, the project aims to monitor and optimize energy usage, personalize living environments, and strengthen security measures.

This work requires a comprehensive approach that integrates machine learning algorithms, blockchain technology, and IoT devices with digital twin systems. The scientific objectives of the project are as follows:

Objective 1: Investigate how digital twin technology can be used to monitor and manage energy usage in smart homes, aiming to reduce energy consumption and enhance efficiency.

Objective 2: Explore ways in which digital twin technology can personalize and automate home environments to improve comfort for residents, including temperature control, lighting, and air quality.

Objective 3: Assess the role of digital twin technology in enhancing security measures within smart homes, including real-time monitoring and threat detection, while ensuring the privacy of residents.

Applicants should have a good mathematical background, excellent programming skills in Python/MATLAB, and an interest in digital twin technologies, cybersecurity and machine learning.

Entry Requirements

Acceptable first degree: Computer Science or related disciplines.

The standard minimum entry requirement is 2:1 in Computing science or related fields.

Funding Information:

This PhD project is in a competition for a Faculty of Science funded studentship. Funding is available to UK applicants and comprises ‘home’ tuition fees and an annual stipend for 3 years. The current UEA/institutional PhD stipend rate is £19,814, and will be subject to any agreed inflationary uplift for 2026/27.
