Defence Sustainment Engineer Location: Melbourne, Australia Work Arrangement: Hybrid (Tuesday to Thursday in office)

About the Role World Fuel Government Solutions is seeking a Defence Sustainment Engineer to support the maintenance, reliability, supportability, and lifecycle management of complex Defence systems. This opportunity is ideal for an engineer with experience supporting, maintaining, improving, or managing complex mechanical assets and equipment throughout their lifecycle. Candidates may come from Defence or related industries such as Oil & Gas, Rail, Marine, Utilities, Manufacturing, Heavy Industry, or Asset Management. Working within our Defence Engineering team, you will help ensure Defence equipment remains safe, reliable, maintainable, and mission ready throughout its operational life. Unlike larger Defence organisations where engineers often work within highly specialised disciplines, this role offers broad exposure across sustainment engineering, maintenance planning, reliability, supportability, systems engineering, acquisition, and Defence support programs. You will work closely with experienced engineers, customers, and suppliers while gaining significant ownership, visibility, and development opportunities. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer looking to broaden their experience, contribute to meaningful Defence programs, and accelerate their career within a collaborative and supportive team.

What You'll Be Doing

• Support sustainment and lifecycle engineering activities across Defence programs. • Contribute to maintenance planning, supportability, and asset management activities. • Support reliability, maintainability, and engineering investigations. • Assist with root cause analysis and problem-solving activities involving complex mechanical systems. • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, technical records, maintenance instructions, and supportability data. • Support engineering change activities and configuration management processes. • Contribute to maintenance concepts, support strategies, and lifecycle planning. • Support the development of technical publications, maintenance documentation, and engineering reports. • Participate in engineering reviews and project activities. • Work closely with Systems Engineers, suppliers, Defence stakeholders, and project teams. • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, maintainability, and asset performance.

What We're Looking For Required Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline. • 3-8 years of engineering experience supporting, maintaining, improving, or managing complex mechanical assets, equipment, or systems. • Experience in one or more of the following areas: • Maintenance Engineering • Asset Management • Reliability Engineering • Sustainment Engineering • Supportability Engineering • Lifecycle Engineering • Root Cause Analysis (RCA)

• Understanding of engineering fundamentals, asset lifecycle management, and maintainability concepts. • Experience working with mechanical systems, industrial equipment, engineered products, or asset-intensive environments. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. • Strong attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality. • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience within Defence, Aerospace, Rail, Marine, Oil & Gas, Utilities, Manufacturing, or other highly regulated industries. • Exposure to maintenance planning, asset lifecycle management, reliability programs, or supportability activities. • Exposure to Integrated Product Support (IPS), Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), or Defence sustainment programs. • Experience participating in engineering investigations, failure analysis, or reliability improvement initiatives. • Exposure to engineering change processes, configuration-controlled environments, or technical data management. • Experience developing or maintaining engineering documentation, maintenance instructions, technical publications, or user manuals.

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role

• Strong mechanical aptitude and an interest in how complex equipment is maintained and supported throughout its lifecycle. • Ability to solve technical problems using a practical and analytical approach. • Strong attention to detail and commitment to engineering quality. • Comfortable working across multiple engineering disciplines and stakeholder groups. • Eagerness to learn and develop within the Defence engineering environment.

Why Join World Fuel Government Solutions?

• Gain exposure across engineering, sustainment, supportability, and lifecycle management. • Work directly with Defence customers, suppliers, and project teams. • Develop broad engineering capability rather than working within a narrow specialty. • Learn from experienced Defence engineers and technical specialists. • Enjoy significant ownership, responsibility, and visibility early in your career. • Build a long-term career within Defence engineering and sustainment.
