Payroll Tax Compliance Lead
Summary:
The U.S. Payroll Tax Compliance Specialist supports the U.S. payroll tax team to deliver on critical payroll activities. These activities include, but are not limited to, keeping Capital One U.S. payroll tax accounts in good standing, timely and accurate tax setup in the Workday payroll system and ADP Smartcompliance, state/local tax account maintenance, and overall compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Responsibilities: Supports the team's critical functions with an emphasis on creating efficiencies through continuous improvementOversee the maintenance of all state and local tax withholding registrations and employer account numbers with the goalAnalyze root cause of escalated tax notices and work with the team to develop corrective action plans. Maintain penalty and interest expense at industry leading levelsWork closely with tax vendor to ensure all tax account discrepancies are researched, documented, and resolved promptlyEstablish strong working relationships with internal partners including corporate tax dept, tax audit, and payroll input providersIdentify, create, and deliver associate pay impact communications due to tax law changesSupports the team's processes to ensure timely and accurate employee tax setup in payroll systemAbility to complete a gross-to-net pay calculation outside of the payroll system and explain to associates with questions about their payAssists other Capital One HR Partners, as needed, to resolve errors and maintain or update accurate information in the payroll systemAssists in year-end W-2 preparation, bonus payroll, and equity processing
Basic Qualifications: High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certificationAt least 2 years experience in payroll taxAt least 2 years experience with Multi-State payroll (5,000+ employees)At least 2 years experience with Local TaxesAt least 2 years experience with Tax Agency RelationsUnderstanding of the gross to net calculation inclusive of pre/post tax deductions and taxable benefitsStrong understanding of end to end payroll and payroll tax laws and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications: Associate degreeProfessional certification such as FPC or CPP5+ years experience in Payroll Tax5+ years experience with tax agency relationsWorkday PayrollADP SmartComplianceLeadership experienceDemonstrated customer service skills, attention to detail, and decision making skills.Accustomed to fast paced environmentStrong desire to grow and learnFamiliarity with pay and benefit programsProficient experience working with Google SuiteExcellent verbal and written communications

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
Richmond, VA: $80,800 - $92,200 for Sr. HR Associate
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
