About this role

Help shape the next generation of technology infrastructure- and grow into a leadership role while doing it.

SMMA is looking for an experienced architect to join our growing Technology practice, working with leading advanced technology and mission critical companies on some of the most complex and rapidly evolving building types in the industry.

Our work includes data centers, advanced manufacturing, semiconductor facilities, research environments, and other mission-critical facilities where architecture, engineering, technology, and infrastructure come together. Our portfolio is deep – having designed 3 million square feet of clean space and data centers nationwide. These projects demand creative problem-solving, technical rigor, and an ability to think beyond traditional architectural boundaries.

This is more than a project role. We are looking for someone who wants to develop into a leader within our Technology team - taking increasing responsibility for projects, building client relationships, mentoring younger staff alongside our in-house experts, and helping us shape the future of this growing practice.

At SMMA, architects and engineers work side-by-side. Our integrated model means you will collaborate directly with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, process, fire protection, structural, site, sustainability, and technology specialists to solve complex problems as one team. You will also have the opportunity to work with the most sophisticated clients, including technology leaders in the AI, defense and semiconductor industries, whose businesses and facilities continue to evolve at extraordinary speed.

What You’ll Do

You will have the opportunity to:

• Lead and contribute to the planning, design, and delivery of complex Technology projects from programming through construction.

• Take increasing ownership of projects, client relationships, and multidisciplinary teams as your experience grows.

• Work directly with architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, and clients to develop highly coordinated solutions for technically demanding environments.

• Translate complex operational, equipment, infrastructure, and performance requirements into thoughtful architectural solutions.

• Lead the integration of building systems with a focus on flexibility, resiliency, safety, durability, constructability, and long-term performance.

• Develop architectural details and specifications for specialized systems, including cleanroom assemblies, hot/cold aisle containment, and other market-specific technologies.

• Lead the preparation and quality review of construction documents, specifications, and technical studies.

• Coordinate architectural solutions with structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, process, fire protection, and specialty engineering disciplines.

• Mentor developing staff and help build the technical capabilities of the Technology team.

• Contribute to the continued growth and evolution of SMMA’s Technology practice.

What We’re Looking For

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited institution.

• 7+ years of architectural experience, including at least 2 years working on advanced technology, mission critical, industrial, research, or other highly technical building types.

• Registered Architect preferred, or actively pursuing licensure.

• Strong understanding of building systems, equipment requirements, and regulatory constraints associated with technically complex environments.

• Experience with Revit, Teams, Bluebeam, and construction administration applications. SMMA’s internal Design Technology team provides additional training and support.

• Strong communication and collaboration skills and an interest in working directly with clients and multidisciplinary teams.

• Curiosity, initiative, and a desire to grow - not only as a technical architect, but as a project, client, and team leader.

Why SMMA?

Technology is one of the most dynamic areas of architecture and engineering today. The facilities supporting AI, cloud computing, semiconductor manufacturing, research, and next-generation technologies are changing quickly—and the teams designing them need to evolve just as quickly.

At SMMA, you will have the opportunity to build specialized expertise while remaining an architect in the fullest sense: solving complex problems, working across disciplines, engaging directly with clients, mentoring others, and helping shape a growing practice.

We are an integrated design firm of architects, interior designers, engineers, design technologists, researchers, and industry experts who believe the best ideas emerge through collaboration. We value technical excellence, thoughtful design, curiosity, and people who want to make an impact.

If you are looking for a place where you can deepen your technical expertise while growing into a meaningful leadership role, we would like to meet you.
