As a Systems Engineer I, you'll design, implement, and maintain complex systems infrastructure that supports business-critical operations. You'll partner across IT and the business to deliver infrastructure projects, provide Tier 3 escalation support, and ensure systems are reliable, scalable, and secure—across both Azure and on-prem VMware environments.

What does a SYSTEMS ENGINEER do at GAINSCO?

• Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver IT infrastructure projects (upgrades, enhancements, and new solutions).

• Design, deploy, and manage Azure resources and equivalent on‑prem VMware infrastructure.

• Provide technical expertise on solution design, implementation plans, and operational readiness.

• Serve as Tier 3 escalation support for complex hardware, software, and network issues from the Systems Administration team.

• Monitor and optimize infrastructure for performance, cost efficiency, and security.

• Configure, manage, and troubleshoot network components including routers, switches, firewalls, SD‑WAN, and wireless.

• Implement and maintain VPNs, VLANs, and other network security controls.

• Ensure backups, disaster recovery (DR), and business continuity practices are in place and maintained.

• Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, and identity/access management.

• Maintain strong documentation for systems, configurations, standards, and procedures.

• Produce routine reports on system health, capacity, and security posture.

• Research and complete training to stay current with emerging infrastructure technologies and best practices.

• Execute code promotions and production deployments during off-hour deployment windows as needed.

What is required?

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

• In lieu of degree: candidates must meet the experience requirements below plus at least 4 additional years of general IT experience.

Certifications:

• Azure Administrator, Azure Solutions Architect, CCNA/CCNP, CompTIA Network+, preferred.

Experience:

• 5+ years professional experience in IT Infrastructure.

• 5+ years Microsoft Windows Server architecture and administration.

• 5+ years network administration (routers/switches, firewalls, SD‑WAN, wireless networks).

• 5+ years Active Directory, Group Policy, DHCP, and DNS administration.

• 5+ years Windows File and Print services.

• 5+ years virtualization technologies (VMware or Hyper‑V).

• 5+ years backup and storage management.

• 5+ years supporting Microsoft 365 services.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure cloud services and networking.

Other skills and abilities:

• Proficiency in scripting and automation (e.g., PowerShell, Python, JSON).

• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills (systems + network).

• Excellent documentation and technical communication skills.

• High attention to detail and ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.

• Strong customer service mindset and collaboration skills.

• Ability to research and learn new technologies quickly.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

• Ability to participate in 24/7 on-call support when scheduled.

Schedule & On-Call hours:

• Standard work week: Monday–Friday: 8:00am – 5:00pm CST.

• After-hours work required: Some work must be scheduled outside business hours, including evenings and weekends (e.g., maintenance windows, deployments).

• On-call rotation required:

• On-call runs Monday–Monday (7 consecutive days)

• Rotation cadence: approximately 1 week every 6 weeks (current rotation)

• Must be reachable 24x7 for critical/emergency needs via Teams and work or personal mobile

• Critical infrastructure support: 24x7 availability for high-severity incidents (during on-call and urgent events).
