About this role

Gresham College invites applications for a Professor of Rhetoric who is passionate about the History of Ideas, especially in the areas of political, philosophical or literary ideas.

The College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Today these lectures are both presented in person in London and live streamed to a global audience, with recordings made available online.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

A strong track record in the relevant academic field Be an engaging communicator with the ability to communicate the complexity of the subject to a broad, interested audience.

The post offers excellent opportunities to widen public exposure for the successful candidate.

The 10-term appointment which starts in April 2027 requires the professor to present six lectures each academic year, two lectures per term. Gresham Professors also participate in college life, attending four Academic Board meetings annually, participating in promotion and outreach, attending social events and acting as ambassadors for the College.

The College pays an annual stipend of £9,000 (plus reasonable UK travel expenses).
