The opportunity

We’re looking for an experienced Underwriter to assess risk, protect profitability, and support profitable growth across our personal lines portfolio. This role exists to ensure thoughtful risk selection, disciplined underwriting decisions, and strong customer outcomes within defined authority levels.

As an Underwriter at Kin, you’ll evaluate submissions, endorsements, inspections, and renewals while collaborating closely with operations, claims, and cross-functional partners. You’ll balance business acumen, regulatory compliance, and customer empathy — helping Kin grow responsibly while maintaining underwriting excellence in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Your responsibilities

Evaluate, select, and underwrite personal lines risks within assigned authority limits to meet profitability and business targets.

Review new business submissions, endorsements, inspections, and renewal policies with accuracy and efficiency.

Escalate risks appropriately to Senior or Executive Underwriters when authority thresholds are exceeded.

Process policy changes and updates for internal teams and customer-facing transactions.

Consistently meet or exceed established KPIs and maintain a minimum quality score of 95%.

Support retention initiatives by collaborating cross-functionally to improve customer outcomes and reduce churn.

Partner with operations management on de-escalations and negative review resolution.

Mentor and support teammates by sharing underwriting knowledge and best practices.

Identify opportunities to improve workflows, automation, and risk evaluation methods.

Manage policies throughout their lifecycle, ensuring compliance with statutory and company guidelines.

Contribute to ad hoc projects and evolving responsibilities as business needs, automation, and product offerings change.

Success in this role

In your first 6–12 months at Kin, success is less about checking boxes and more about the impact you create. You’ll use your skills and judgment to take ownership of meaningful work, improve how we operate, and help move Kin’s mission forward. Along the way, you’ll deliver outcomes that make a real difference for both Kinfolk and the homeowners we serve.

By the end of your first year, you should feel confident in your role, trusted as an owner, and proud of the progress you’ve helped make.

Underwriting decisions consistently align with profitability targets, authority guidelines, and risk appetite.

Quality scores and KPI performance meet or exceed expectations while maintaining strong customer experience standards.

Cross-functional partners rely on your judgment for de-escalations, retention efforts, and complex risk reviews.

Process improvements or workflow enhancements contribute to greater efficiency and reduced friction for customers and internal teams.

What you’ll bring

5+ years of underwriting experience in auto and personal lines insurance.

Active insurance license and strong knowledge of personal lines underwriting and risk selection principles.

Experience making independent underwriting decisions within defined authority limits.

Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment with limited structure.

Business acumen to evaluate how underwriting decisions impact profitability, retention, and overall portfolio performance.

Understanding of how customer behavior influences loss propensity and risk exposure.

Strong communication skills with the ability to engage internal and external stakeholders in an empathetic, professional manner.

Ability to context-switch efficiently between tasks and manage competing priorities.

Proficiency in Google Suite or similar tools and comfort navigating multiple systems simultaneously.

Demonstrated critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a continuous improvement mindset.

Bonus:

Bilingual Spanish proficiency.

Experience underwriting umbrella or high-net-worth personal lines policies.

How we workWe don’t just hire for skills. We hire for alignment. Kinfolk bring diverse perspectives, but we’re united by a shared set of values that shape how we work and how we show up for each other and our customers.

Run through walls, together - Our industry is stuck in the status quo. But Kin is different. We are challengers. Innovators unwavering in our mission to fix insurance for those who need it most. We are changing insurance for good. We roll up our sleeves, take action, and get “impossible” things done every day with grit and teamwork.

Raise the bar. Drop the ego - Attitudes are contagious. Every one of us is responsible for creating the culture we want to work in. High performance. Low drama. Always respectful. Like professional sports teams, we win by working in sync. We show up, work hard, and play to each other’s strengths.

Act like an owner - We are owners, fully accountable for achieving Kin’s mission. That requires positive, proactive, big-picture thinking well beyond our job descriptions. Ask questions, Take ownership. Do the right thing, even when it‘s hard. Because when Kin thrives, so do you. And so do our customers.

Operate lean. Deliver more - We build efficiency into everything we do. Each dollar we save gets reinvested to deliver more to our customers: better pricing, more products, and new innovations. We work smarter by relentlessly prioritizing and using technology, including AI, to multiply our impact. Lean is about focus, not deprivation. Lean isn't a limitation – it's our competitive advantage.

Keep asking ‘What if?’ - We value curiosity. To make insurance better for our customers, we experiment. We embrace insights. And we base decisions on data rather than assumptions. We see setbacks as opportunities for growth and are always learning and improving. Both individually and as a company.
