Schedule

Work Shift Day Scheduled Weekly Hours 40 Summary This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by being a competent, respectful, and compassionate professional who is able to safely, appropriately, accurately, efficiently and independently follow Mercy's standards along with policies and procedures while caring for patients. The Registered Staff Nurse works with the unit specific team members to identify clinical problems, develop a plan, and educate patients and families. Job Description Job Duties
• Ensures that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome.
• Demonstrates competent assessment, planning, intervention, coordination and evaluation skills based on the individual patient plan of care.
• Continually assesses patient and family needs in order to provide quality care based on a patient centered care model.
• Demonstrates critical thinking skills and judgment necessary to implement a patient plan of care, nursing interventions and procedures.
• Maintains accurate and real time documentation of nursing care provided to ensure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team, according to hospital policy and procedure related to documentation parameters.

Department Specific Duties
Behavioral Health (for assigned position within the Healing Center)
• Assesses and reassesses Suicide Risk, per policy, utilizing the tools provided and adapts the plan of care with appropriate interventions based upon assessment.
• De-escalates patients in crisis to prevent acts of aggression towards self and others.
• Conducts psycho educational groups as needed and/or educates one to one on diagnosis, symptom management, medication, wellness, and positive coping skills.
• Monitors for withdrawal from alcohol and other substances and follows protocols and utilizes appropriate interventions based upon assessment.
Birthplace
• Performs Surgical Assistant duties as needed.
Postpartum Care:
• Demonstrates appropriate care and knowledge including assessment of and interventions for pain, fundus, lochial flow, perineum, incision, vital signs, blood loss, teaching needs, bonding and psychosocial situations.
Breastfeeding Support:
• Demonstrates appropriate care and knowledge including assessment of and interventions for latch, adequate feedings, sore nipples and feeding cues.
Newborn Care:
• Demonstrates appropriate care and knowledge which includes assessment and interventions for pain, gestational age, near-term infants, jaundice, temp instability, respiratory status, hypoglycemia, newborn screen, hearing screens, Hugs, signs and symptoms of sepsis and abnormalities.
Labor & Delivery
• Demonstrates appropriate care and knowledge including assessment and interventions for admission to labor, labor pain management, epidural management, SVE's, determining if a patient is in labor, fetal monitor assessment, signs and symptoms of risk factors, PIH, preterm labor, pushing, delivery and immediate postpartum care.
OR Team Leader:
• Demonstrates appropriate care and knowledge of perioperative care including assisting anesthesia and post-anesthesia care.
OR Circulator:
• Circulates in the OB OR including preparing the patient for surgery and assisting with counts.
Lactation Consultant:
• Performs lactation rounds on nursing mothers daily and develops feeding plans when indicated, performs outpatient visits and weight checks with appropriate interventions and responds to the lactation line in a timely and efficient manner.
Home Visit:
• Completes assessment of the mother and newborn in a home setting and makes appropriate referrals as needed.
Childbirth Education:
• Plans, coordinates and presents prenatal education classes using adult learning principles and evidenced based curriculum.
• Utilizes audio/visual equipment and other educational aides including laptop and projector, power point application, TV/DVD player and computer-based instruction.
Cardiac Imaging
• Demonstrates working knowledge of ancillary equipment required for non-invasive testing including but not limited to treadmill stress systems, bedside telemetry monitors, Holter and event monitors and specialized IV infusion pumps.
• Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with continuous cardiac monitoring including rhythm identification, interpretation and follow through with appropriate interventions.
• Completes all documentation and charge entry in complete, accurate and timely manner.
• Coordinates procedures within the department maintaining effective communication and time management for staff, physicians and patients.
Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab
• Conducts orientation session with patient, which includes interpretation of exercise prescription, guidelines for safety, and overview of program.
• Assists participant in goal setting and progression of exercise.
• Demonstrates competency in implementing the patient's plan of care, including writing exercise prescriptions, calculating target heart rate, and educational sessions.
• Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with continuous cardiac monitoring including rhythm identification, interpretation and follow through with appropriate intervention.
Cardiac-Stroke Center
• Performs NIHSS stroke scale accurately.
• Administers Intravenous cardiac medications per protocol.
• Provides appropriate patient care for Cardiac and Neurology patient populations.
• Assesses and manages TR Band and sheath lines per protocol.
• Provides appropriate care to the following patients per protocols: Pacemaker, Ablation, TEE, Cardioversion.
• Interprets and Monitors patient's EKG rhythms and implements appropriate protocols.
Cardiovascular
• Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient undergoing invasive procedures including insertion, monitoring and care of the catheter.
• Demonstrates the ability to titrate intravenous medications according to the patient's hemodynamic status.
• Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with continuous cardiac monitoring including rhythm identification, interpretation, and follow through with appropriate intervention.
• Maintains good sterile technique throughout the procedure by diligent observation, instruction and supervision in the use of sterile technique.
• Assures that all areas of procedure documentation are complete and accurate.
• Demonstrates a working knowledge of ancillary equipment.
• Correctly collects and accurately labels specimens.
• Assesses, evaluates, and carries out nursing interventions and teaching in patients receiving treatment and/or undergoing diagnostic procedures.
• Communicates clinically relevant information to the physician performing the procedure.
• Participates in on-call schedule, working as needed after normal operating hours.
• Assists in maintaining adequate supply inventory for the department, notifies appropriate person when stock is low.
EP Specific Duties:
• Provides retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type, appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique.
• Utilizes appropriate technique to assist with hemostasis.
• Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body plans as directed by the surgeon (sutures, staples, etc.).
Care Connections Clinic
• Incorporates ethical principles and professional standards in the care of patients and families experiencing life-limiting, progressive illnesses as well as identifying and advocating for the wishes and preferences of patients and families.
• Communicates effectively and compassionately with patient, family, and health care team members about end-of-life issues.
• Able to work with a multidisciplinary team, including medical director, social workers, chaplain and other health care workers to develop a plan of care associated with end of life or complex health care states.
Critical Care Float Pool
• Maintains skills and competencies from each Unit in the Critical Care Float Pool annually.
Digestive Health Center
• Demonstrates knowledge of moderate sedation medications, actions, and reversal agents used.
• Demonstrates ability to recognize cardiac rhythms and knows how to treat arrhythmias appropriately.
• Operates equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
• Maintains work area and equipment in condition required by department standards.
• Demonstrates ability to troubleshoot equipment.
• Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures and correct use of protective barrier equipment. This includes use of wire and spyglass during ERCP procedures.

Emergency Department/s

Healing Center
• Demonstrates the ability to effectively manage a wide variety of patient care situations.
• Provides patient care to the physician wound clinic, outpatient wound care and hyperbaric chamber.
• Performs activities and remains up to date as outlined, requested, and/or granted within the Surgical Assistant privileging requirements which have been designated by the Department Manager and/or Medical Director
• Provides call support according to department needs on weekends and holidays.
Hematology/Oncology For Clinic Staff:
• Collaborate with physicians to manage their practice.
• Provide patient education on oncologic and hematology conditions.
• Communicate test results and medication changes to patients.
• Triage phone calls and determine necessity for provider involvement.
• Direct other clinical staff as assigned to assure quality care and efficient patient flow.
• Provide clinical scribe coverage as needed.
• Provide cross coverage for infusion or other areas as assigned.
For Infusion Staff:
• Function independently and as a team member to safely provide chemotherapy treatment.
• Demonstrate competency in IV insertion and infusaport access skills.
• Collaborate with physicians and clinic staff to manage patient care needs.
• Provide patient education on oncologic and hematology conditions.
• Direct other clinical staff or volunteers as needed to assure quality care and efficient patient flow.
• Provide cross coverage for clinic or other staff as needed.
Hiawatha Outpatient Surgical Center (OSC)
• Processes patient through the surgical experience in a timely fashion to maintain departmental efficiencies.
• Remains flexible with dynamic work schedule to meet staffing needs.
• Maintains high success rate for IV starts on first attempt.
• Maintains proper sterile technique throughout the procedure by diligent observation, instruction and supervision in the use of sterile technique.
• Ensures that all areas of procedure documentation are complete and accurate.
• Monitors supply usage in the OR to ensure accurate charges are submitted.
• Demonstrates critical thinking skills in anticipating the needs of the OR.
• Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a specialty team.
• Assists in pre-op, recovery, and central sterile areas as needed or directed to maintain operational efficiency.
• Accurately prepares charts and speaks with patients prior to day of surgery to assure all pertinent information is present and relayed to the patient.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Hospice House & Hospice Community
• Demonstrates critical thinking in assessing and managing end of life symptoms, utilizing all available team members with awareness and knowledge of treatment options and resources available.
• Demonstrates accountability in time management, flexibility in scheduling and good organizational skills to meet the ever-changing needs of patients and families at end of life.
• Maintains professional boundaries while providing kind and compassionate support and education to patients and families regarding end-of-life cares and needs.
• Demonstrates timely and effective collaboration with physician offices, hospice medical director and other members of the hospice interdisciplinary team to manage patient's symptoms and execute the plan of care.
Intensive Care Center (ICC)
• Monitors electrocardiograms initiated upon admission and continued until transferred or discharged unless otherwise ordered by a physician. • Monitors Invasive Hemodynamic (Swan Ganz catheters, arterial lines, CVP) • Assesses Neurologic Monitoring (invasive and noninvasive). • Manages Mechanical Ventilation/BiPap/High flow Nasal cannula etc. • Administers medications including continuous infusion of vasoactive drugs for hemodynamic regulation & narcotics for sedation and pain management. • Performs venipuncture of peripheral vessels to obtain ordered lab tests. Registered nurses will draw arterial blood gasses. • Manages Codes & Dysrhythmias including the use of defibrillator, transcutaneous and transvenous pacemaker • Manages care of critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and advanced interventions to support cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and other vital organ function. The patient population includes both medical and surgical ICU patients with complex, life-threatening conditions. • Acts as Charge Nurse and, when oriented, will function independently in the Code/MET role for Mercy Medical Center.
Medical Float Pool
• Maintains skills and competencies from each Unit in the Medical Float Pool annually.
Mercy Home Care
• Manages a case load of patients in a collaborative process that assesses, plans, implements, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates the options and services required to meet the patient's health and human service needs.
• Demonstrates ability to function independently.
• Demonstrates tolerance of home environment and diverse lifestyle of patient/family.
MMC General Surgery
• Collaborates with assigned physician to manage patient practice.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) NICU:
• Demonstrates appropriate care and knowledge of the ill newborn including assessment and interventions for newborn resuscitation, oxygen therapy, ventilator care, starting IV's, UAC's, ABG's, fluid replacement, TPN, skincare, developmental care, medications, NG feedings, NICU admissions, parent support and teaching.
• Attends deliveries in the Birthplace and OB OR and assists the newborn in transition to extra-uterine life using NRP guidelines.
Cross Training:
• The NICU nurse is cross-trained to the mother-baby and Pediatric units.
Postpartum Care:
• Demonstrates appropriate care and knowledge including assessment of and interventions for pain, fundus, lochial flow, perineum, incision, vital signs, blood loss, teaching needs, bonding and psychosocial situations.
