About this role

The Area Manager is responsible for leading a team of warehouse associates to safely achieve operational targets in productivity, quality, and customer service. The role involves managing daily fulfillment center operations, monitoring key performance indicators, coaching and developing employees, and driving continuous process improvements. Area Managers collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure efficient workflow execution while maintaining Amazon's high standards for safety, quality, and operational excellence. Key job responsibilities Key Roles & Responsibilities 1. People Leadership Manage a team of 50–150+ associates, depending on the department. Coach, develop, and motivate associates and Process Assistants (PAs). Conduct performance reviews, feedback sessions, and engagement activities. Manage attendance, productivity, and behavioral performance. 2. Safety Management Drive a strong safety culture. Ensure compliance with safety procedures and regulations. Conduct safety audits, GEMBA walks, and risk assessments. Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions. 3. Operations Management Deliver daily volume plans and throughput targets. Monitor KPIs such as: UPH (Units per Hour) TPH (Throughput per Hour) Productivity Quality Defects Backlog Labor Utilization Coordinate labor allocation and shift execution. 4. Performance Analysis Analyze operational data and identify performance gaps. Prepare shift reports and business updates. Develop action plans to recover misses and improve results. Use data to influence decisions and improve business outcomes. 5. Continuous Improvement Lead Lean, Kaizen, and Six Sigma initiatives. Remove process bottlenecks. Standardize best practices. Implement productivity and quality improvement projects. 6. Cross-Functional Partnership Work closely with: Operations Managers Safety Team HR/PXT Learning Team Quality Team Engineering/RME Finance and Planning teams A day in the life An Area Manager's day is focused on ensuring the shift delivers safety, productivity, quality, and customer service targets while leading and supporting associates on the floor. Before Shift Review previous shift performance and handover notes. Analyze key metrics (Volume, TPH, UPH, Backlog, Quality, Attendance). Plan labor allocation based on volume and staffing. Prepare shift priorities and recovery actions for any gaps. Start of Shift Conduct a shift startup meeting with Process Assistants and associates. Communicate safety messages, operational goals, and focus areas. Verify staffing levels and assign labor to work areas. During Shift Monitor operational performance through dashboards and floor observations. Conduct GEMBA walks to identify process barriers and safety concerns. Coach associates and Process Assistants on performance and standard work. Manage labor movement between departments to balance workload. Resolve operational issues such as equipment downtime, volume spikes, or staffing shortages. Partner with Safety, Learning, HR, and Engineering teams as needed. Drive engagement activities and recognize top performers. Performance Management Review associate productivity and quality metrics. Provide real-time coaching and feedback. Conduct one-on-one discussions with underperforming associates. Support training and development plans. Continuous Improvement Identify process inefficiencies and bottlenecks. Lead Kaizen and process improvement initiatives. Track action items and ensure completion. End of Shift Review final performance against plan. Prepare a shift bridge explaining misses and wins. Conduct handover with the next shift's leadership team. Document key issues, recovery plans, and outstanding actions. Key Metrics Monitored Daily Safety Incidents TPH (Throughput per Hour) UPH (Units per Hour) Quality Defects Backlog Labor Hours Attendance and Headcount Ship-Out Performance Customer Promise / CPT Attainment A typical Area Manager spends 60–80% of the shift on the operations floor coaching teams and managing execution, and 20–40% analyzing performance, planning labor, and reporting results.
