Job SummaryThe primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of journey-level masonry work needed to maintain, repair, alter, and construct exterior and interior surfaces/structures built of a variety of brick, block, and/or stone. Such surfaces and structures include but are not limited to walls, walks, foundations, plazas, floors, fences, fireplaces, chimneys, catch basins, vaults, parapets, manholes, and boilers.

QualificationsTo qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Dexterity and Safety Knowledge of materials Measurement and Layout Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) SCREEN OUT: Minimum Qualifications: Under normal supervision, performed common tasks associated with the position of Mason. Common tasks include the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of brick, stone and block. Ability to lay common and face brick, firebrick, cinder and cement block, glass block, terra cotta, and various artificial and natural stone in constructing and repairing such items as walls, walks, chimneys, fireplaces, manholes, boilers, and catch basins. Ability to work from oral instructions, blueprints, work orders, and rough sketches. Experience in cutting and shaping brick, block, and stone in constructing and repairing window and door openings, and corners. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. Major DutiesMaintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of brick, stone, and block. Repair and maintain historic masonry on buildings, parapets, and boundary fences, chimneys, fireplaces, manholes, and boilers. Must be able to match existing historic surfaces. Prepare surfaces for painting by sanding, buffing, and cleaning; cleans brushes and other painting equipment; moves ladders, scaffolding, and/or drop cloths; and carries paint, brushes, and equipment. Apply one or more sealing compounds occasionally. Must be able to mix paint to match existing historic colors. Must be able to cut in around windows, doors, corners, lighting, etc. Cut-off Dates: This is an open continuous announcement, in which applications are collected over several months, and have multiple cut-off dates. Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. Age Restriction: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Skills

Masonry1039 hours. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is Mar-Oct but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.Department of the Interior
