About this role

This PhD “Novel use of AI in Marine Monitoring” will focus on marine monitoring in NEOM Nature Reserve (NNR) within northern Saudi Arabia. The PhD will develop techniques for automation in surveying marine biodiversity, with an overall aim of decreasing the time between surveying and meaningful analytical outputs for subsequent management action.

The PhD student will possess excellent programming skills, which will be required to lead the development of automated data analysis and modelling. The student will also undertake a research secondment to coral reef monitoring sites at NEOM for three months towards the beginning of the PhD to join the surveying and management teams. Chapters of work include using ‘You Only Look Once (YOLO)’ techniques to automate identification of key functional groups of reef fish, to record relative fish size and diversity, and to undertake automated analysis of biologging data.
