About this role
Explaining and Predicting the Ocean Conveyor (EPOC) is a 5-year research project funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme - www.epoc-eu.org. Involving 24 science institutions from Europe and North America, EPOC aims to generate a new concept of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), its function in the Earth system and how it impacts weather and climate. An important part of the project’s mission is to ensure timely and effective communication of project progress, results and outcomes to the wider scientific community, decision-makers and policy developers. Seascape leads EPOC’s work on communication, dissemination and stakeholder engagement with the aim of maximising the uptake and impact of EPOC research by widely sharing knowledge, outcomes and results with a broad range of audiences. To that end, we are seeking to recruit a new team member to support these important activities as the project enters its final phase.
About the post
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and scientifically literate team member to assist with stakeholder engagement, communication and outreach activities for EPOC. Working within the Seascape team but as an integral member of the wider EPOC project community, key tasks will involve working with scientists to develop communications materials to showcase the project’s outcomes and results, and engaging with a broad range of stakeholders (including policy developers and decision makers) to ensure take-up of those results via workshops, case studies and online platforms.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in marine science (postgraduate level), preferably with a good knowledge of oceanographic concepts and principles, including modelling techniques and ocean observing. Excellent communication skills, a personable approach and the ability to translate complex scientific information into digestible information suitable for a wide range of audiences is essential. Some experience with stakeholder engagement/liaison is desirable; familiarity with science-policy interfaces would be an advantage. The post holder must be comfortable with working independently, be able to plan, manage and organise their workload to meet deadlines, and be flexible and creative in their approach to problem solving.
The post is available for 15 months (depending on start date). Working hours are full-time, but part-time may be considered.
Key activities
Work with the EPOC science team to produce effective and creative communication materials that explain project results and outcomes, including their relevance to policymakers and other stakeholders; Assist with the development of a series of EPOC case studies and associated resources that demonstrate the utility of EPOC outcomes; Help build and maintain productive relationships with stakeholder organisations, identify and foster engagement opportunities, organise stakeholder engagement events and track the impact of these activities; Maintain EPOC’s online presence via social media and the project website.
Skills and competences
The post-holder is expected to have the following competences:
Postgraduate qualification in a relevant marine science discipline (essential); Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build successful and productive relationships with project partners and other relevant people and groups (essential); Be able to plan and organise workload effectively, work both independently and as part of a team, and keep necessary records for management purposes; Ability to draft comprehensive reports and publications and deliver effective presentations.
