ResuMinder joins the Stripe Startups programme

ResuMinder has joined the Stripe Startups programme and Accelerate on Demand. What it means for how your payments are handled, and where the engineering time it frees up is going.

In August, ResuMinder joined the Stripe Startups programme at Stripe's invitation, along with a place in Accelerate on Demand, which puts us in direct contact with Stripe's technical specialists while we build.

The short version, if you use ResuMinder: we now have a direct line to the people who build the rails our payments run on, which frees us to spend more of the week on the part you actually came here for.

Why we build on Stripe

Every subscription bought on our website runs through Stripe Checkout. When you upgrade, your card details are entered on a page hosted by Stripe, not on our servers. We never see or store your card number. What we hold is what Stripe hands back afterwards: the card brand and the last four digits, enough to show you which card is on file and nothing more.

Managing a subscription works the same way. Updating a card, downloading an invoice, cancelling: all of it happens in Stripe's own billing portal, so the security and compliance work behind it is Stripe's too.

That was a deliberate choice, made early. Payments are a solved problem for a company whose entire business is payments, and a permanent distraction for everyone else. We would rather be excellent at matching people to jobs than adequate at card processing.

What the programme gives us

Two things that matter.

The first is credits against Stripe fees. At our stage that is real money, and it goes straight back into the product rather than into the cost of taking payment for it.

The second is the one we were actually after: direct access to Stripe's technical specialists through Accelerate on Demand. It is the difference between a billing-architecture question costing an afternoon and costing a fortnight. For a small team, that is the whole ballgame.

What this means for you

Your subscription carries on exactly as it is: same price, same plan, nothing you need to do. This is not one of those announcements that turns up with a new invoice attached.

What it changes is where our time goes. Every hour not spent chasing a failed renewal or reading payments documentation is an hour on the matching engine, on the size and freshness of the job catalogue, and on the things people email us about. That is the entire return on this, and it is the one we will judge it by.

There is a second effect that is harder to see from the outside. Getting billing wrong is one of the quietest ways a small product loses people: a renewal fails silently, a card expires, someone is locked out of a search they were relying on that week. Having specialists to call about exactly that class of problem is not glamorous, but it is the sort of thing you only notice when it stops happening.

Where we are heading

ResuMinder exists to make job hunting less of an administrative grind: your CV read properly, matched against a catalogue of millions of live listings, with the repetitive parts of applying handled for you. Everything we take on is judged against that. Joining Stripe Startups is not a milestone in itself; it is a way of buying back engineering time and pointing it at the product.

If you have not looked in a while, it is worth another visit. The catalogue is considerably larger than it was six months ago, and it grows every day.

None of this is the interesting part, though. The interesting part is the job you have not found yet. That is what the freed-up time is going into.
