Job summary Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) is seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Biomedical Scientist (Biochemistry) to be part of the Biochemical Genetics and Screening Laboratory. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join our team. Main duties of the job The successful candidate will join the team in our wider department of Specialist Laboratory Medicine. It is a progressive and highly patient-focused service and encompasses the following areas of specialist biochemistry; Toxicology (drugs of abuse), Trace metals, Immunosuppressant Drug Monitoring, Steroid Endocrinology, Haemoglobinopathy Screening in addition to the Biochemical Genetics, Newborn Bloodspot Screening and Foetal Anomaly Screening (FASP) services.

Job description Job responsibilities

The post will be placed in the Screening laboratory/Biochemical Genetics. The role involves working as part of a small, specialised team, and this is an excellent opportunity to further develop skills, knowledge and experience within an exciting, specialised service area. Candidates need to be well organised and able to manage and prioritise their workload successfully. Excellent communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to cultivate and maintain good working relationships with members of the team and service users. Duties will include routinely performing a wide variety of laboratory techniques and assays (e.g. LC-MS/MS, GC-MS, ion exchange HPLC, electrophoresis, thin layer chromatography, AutoDELFIA platform). Experience in these techniques, or more widely in Newborn/FASP screening/Biochemical Genetics, would be advantageous but not essential. The post holder will be expected to perform other aspects of laboratory analysis: IQC, EQA, maintenance and troubleshooting of assays, training staff, technical validation, stock control and ordering of supplies. The post holder will receive full training and will report to the section leads. They will be required to hold a Registration Portfolio in Clinical Chemistry and be registered with the HCPC. This role is full-time, 1.0WTE Band 6 (Annex 21 will be considered), 37.5 hours p/w. Working hours: 08:30-17:00 Mon-Fri, it is expected that the post holder will take part in rotas for Saturday morning working.

Qualifications Essential

Degree (or equivalent) suitable for HCPC registration. Registered biomedical scientist. Working or intending to start specialist portfolio (2006 registration onwards) (or equivalent) Competence in a wide range of complex laboratory procedures Participation in relevant CPD schemes Willingness to undertake other formal study and in house training
